lesson
An ending can change an earlier impression
1 · Learn
Read: The trophy stood at the centre of the table. Arun polished its silver rim while the others waited. He lifted it high, smiled, and passed it to the youngest runner. Only then did he remove the label carrying his own name.
The opening focuses on possession and display; the final action reframes the moment as giving up recognition. Structural analysis explains how the order of information shapes interpretation, not merely what happens.
2 · Worked example
The removal of Arun's own label is delayed until the end, so readers revise the assumption that he is preparing to celebrate himself.
3 · Your turn
What does the final sentence reveal that the opening did not establish?
Check your answer
The trophy bore Arun's name and he is relinquishing that personal recognition as he passes it on.
4 · Apply your learning
Move the final sentence to the beginning and discuss how the reader's experience changes.
Adult guidance and safety
Use the actual supplied passage before asking for evidence. Accept alternative interpretations supported by precise details. These short models require wider whole-text reading, two authors studied in depth during the year, and the stage's Shakespeare provision before full KS3 coverage can be claimed.
Open your writing and drawing pad
Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.
Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
