Count and compare · Lesson 8 of 32

Numbers have names

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

We can write a number using a numeral or a word. 5 and five name the same number.

Match each word to a group. Read it with an adult. Look carefully at teen words: fourteen and forty are not the same.

Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

I read seven. I find 7. I count seven blocks to check the match.

Your turn

Which numeral matches twelve: 12 or 20? Then write the word for 4.

Have a go before opening the answer.

Let's check together

12 matches twelve. The word for 4 is four.

Try it away from the page

Practise three number words at a time. Build, say, copy and then write each from memory.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Explore and practise freely. Opening this lesson or using the writing pad does not save completion or a score.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Prerequisite: quantities and numerals. Adult reads unfamiliar words; spread all 20 names over several short sessions.

Use large counters, blocks and paper before symbols. Revisit a lesson until the child can show and explain the idea. Numbers grow from 0–10 to 20, then 100; these pages are not a one-sitting course.

These are teaching introductions, not a claim of mastery. Open the subject's coverage map and limits.
