Pick the meaning that fits

1 · Learn

A dictionary entry may list several meanings for one spelling. Match the meaning to its use, not only to the first definition.

Read these sentences: 'A crane lifted the beam.' 'A crane stood in the marsh.' In the first, crane is a lifting machine. In the second, it is a bird. Other words in the sentence give evidence.

Crane + beam: machineCrane + marsh: bird
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I explain that lifted the beam points to the machine meaning. I do not assume the same word always names the same thing.

3 · Your turn

In 'The seal on the jar was broken', does seal probably mean an animal or a closure? Give a clue.

Check your answer

A closure. Jar and broken support that meaning in this sentence.

4 · Apply your learning

Use a dictionary to find two meanings of another familiar word. Write one clear sentence for each and compare with a partner.
