Build a two-digit number

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Ten ones can be grouped into one ten. In 34, the 3 means three tens and the 4 means four ones.

Three tens are 30. Add four ones: 30 + 4 = 34. The position of each digit matters.

In 60, the zero shows there are no extra ones. There are six tens. Without the zero, 6 would mean only six ones.

34 = 30 + 43 tens and 4 ones60: 6 tens and 0 ones
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I build 52 with five bundles of ten and two loose sticks. I say fifty-two.

3 · Your turn

What number has six tens and three ones? What does the 6 mean?

Check your answer

63. The 6 means six tens, or 60.

4 · Apply your learning

Use large counters or drawn bundles to build 24 and 42. Explain why they differ. Then build 60 and 6: explain what the zero tells you.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical objects before symbols. Read the task aloud when needed and ask the child to explain, not just name an answer. Revisit with different examples; one successful answer is not proof of fluency.
