Two letters: ph

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Say photo with your adult. The first sound is like the first sound in fish. In photo we write that sound with p and h together.

Read dolphin with your adult. Find ph inside the word. Two letters can work together to write one sound.

ph in photoph in dolphinf in fish
Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

My adult says photo. I point to ph, say its sound and read the whole word with help. A photo is a picture made with a camera.

Your turn

Find the two letters that write the fish sound in dolphin.

Have a go before opening the answer.

Let's check together

ph. Listen to your adult say dolphin, then read it together.

Try it away from the page

Find ph on the photo and dolphin word cards. Say each word. Tell your adult one thing about a dolphin without needing to spell the whole explanation.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Explore and practise freely. Opening this lesson or using the writing pad does not save completion or a score.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Ph represents /f/ in these examples, but do not replace f with ph in ordinary words such as fish. Longer words need known syllables and vowel correspondences; model and support them rather than demanding untaught decoding. Follow the child's taught phonics sequence. An adult models unfamiliar sounds, reads instructions and explains meanings. Revisit a few words at a time; do not guess from pictures.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.

These are teaching introductions, not a claim of mastery. Open the subject's coverage map and limits.
