Read field and chief

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Listen to field. In this word, ie writes the ee sound you hear in see.

Compare pie with your adult. Ie sounds different there. The letters alone do not give one sound in every word, so learn and revisit each example.

field — chiefie in fieldpie has a different sound
Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

I read field after my adult and point to ie. A field is an open area of land. I say, 'We walked beside the field.'

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Model /i:/ here and support adjacent consonants. Explain each word, including grief sensitively; allow an alternative example if a child has recently experienced loss. Piece/niece have additional spellings to model. Follow the child's taught phonics sequence. An adult reads the instructions, models the sounds and explains unfamiliar vocabulary. Revisit a few words over several days; do not guess words from pictures.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
