Listen and understand · Lesson 70 of 77

Retell a familiar tale

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Listen as your adult reads this short retelling. Three little pigs each built a home. The first used straw and the second used sticks. A wolf blew those homes down, so the pigs ran to the brick house. The wolf could not blow the brick house down. The three pigs were safe together.

This is a traditional tale: people have told different versions for many years. It has repeated events, a problem and a safe ending. Retelling means saying the important events in the right order, not remembering every word.

Watch how I do it

I use the pictures as reminders after hearing the story. First the straw house fell. Next the stick house fell. Last the brick house stayed up and the pigs were safe.

Your turn

Why did the pigs run to the brick house?

Have a go before opening the answer.

Let's check together

The other two homes had been blown down, and the brick house was stronger.

Try it away from the page

Tell the tale in your own words. Use first, next and last. Then act out one scene with an adult or partner and talk about how this tale is like another familiar story.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Explore and practise freely. Opening this lesson or using the writing pad does not save completion or a score.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Adult reads the complete retelling and explains traditional tale. Compare several properly licensed or public-domain versions across the year. Do not use this short lesson as a substitute for sharing whole high-quality books.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
