Listen and understand · Lesson 74 of 77

Explain an idea and listen to another

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Adult reads: 'Ava and Sol found one dry seat under the shelter. Ava wanted to sit because her shoe was wet. Sol wanted to sit because his leg was tired.'

Two characters can have different reasons. In a book discussion, listen to the other person, take a turn and use because to explain your idea. Role play lets us try a character's words without claiming that there is only one correct feeling.

Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

I say, 'I think they could take turns because both have a reason.' My partner may suggest another fair plan. I listen and respond to that idea.

Your turn

Choose Ava or Sol. What would the character say? Give a reason.

Have a go before opening the answer.

Let's check together

Answers vary. A supported answer uses the supplied fact, such as 'I need the seat because my leg is tired,' for Sol.

Try it away from the page

Act out a kind conversation. Take one turn each, ask a relevant question and agree a plan. Afterwards, explain what the other person suggested.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Explore and practise freely. Opening this lesson or using the writing pad does not save completion or a score.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Model disagreement without confrontation. Accept speech, signing, AAC, gesture or an adult-scribed answer. Praise relevant listening and clear reasons rather than speed or volume.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.

These are teaching introductions, not a claim of mastery. Open the subject's coverage map and limits.
