Listen and understand · Lesson 73 of 77

Stop, check and read it again

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

When we read, the words should match the letters and make sense together. We do not guess from a picture. If a word sounds wrong, stop. Look from left to right, say the taught sounds, blend again and reread the whole sentence.

The print says, 'The red hen sat on the nest.' If someone reads 'The red hen sat on the net,' the last word does not match all the letters. Look at n-e-s-t, blend nest, then reread the sentence correctly.

Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

I hear net, but I see an s before t. I point to n-e-s-t, blend nest and reread: 'The red hen sat on the nest.' Now the spoken word matches the print and the sentence makes sense.

Your turn

The print says 'A frog jumps into the pond.' Your adult pretends to read pool. What should you do?

Have a go before opening the answer.

Let's check together

Stop and look at p-o-n-d, blend pond using taught correspondences, then reread the complete sentence with pond.

Try it away from the page

Ask an adult to make one pretend substitution in a short sentence matched to your taught phonics. Find it by checking the print, correct it and reread smoothly.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Explore and practise freely. Opening this lesson or using the writing pad does not save completion or a score.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Use only words containing taught correspondences. Meaning is a final check after decoding, never a reason to guess an unknown printed word from a picture or first letter.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.

These are teaching introductions, not a claim of mastery. Open the subject's coverage map and limits.
