Read before answering

Fictional selection model: camouflaged beetles on mottled leaves. In an earlier population of 100, 15 have the stated inherited variant; in a later generation of 100, 35 have it. Assume inheritance, different reproductive success and no migration in this simplified model. These are supplied numbers, not observations of a real population.

  1. Find the variant's percentage in each generation and the percentage-point change from 15 to 35 per 100.
  2. Explain how the variant in 'camouflaged beetles on mottled leaves' could become more common without individuals choosing to change their genes.
  3. Do the two counts alone prove selection was the only possible cause in a real population?
