Online worksheet ยท 3 of 4

Keep an exact root when needed - Online practice 3

Read the information, then answer the questions. An adult may read the instructions aloud. Show your working where asked.

Read before answering

Work with sqrt(48), where sqrt denotes the non-negative square root. Factor 48 as 16 x 3; the first factor is a square. An exact root need not be a terminating decimal. Compare also sqrt(9 + 16) with sqrt(9) + sqrt(16): a product rule is not an addition rule.

  1. Simplify sqrt(48) exactly using its square factor.
  2. Between which consecutive integers does sqrt(48) lie? Justify using squares.
  3. Why cannot the square-factor method justify sqrt(9 + 16) = sqrt(9) + sqrt(16)?
