Punctuation should clarify the relationship - Paper 1

Read the information, then answer the questions. An adult may read the instructions aloud. Show your working where asked.

Read before answering

Two draft pairs. A: 'The clock struck six, the doors remained closed.' B: 'The notice gave one instruction wait by the side entrance.' In A, both parts are independent clauses; a comma alone makes a splice in this formal writing task. B has a complete lead-in followed by its explanation or named item. Choose punctuation from the grammatical relationship, not decoration.
