Read before answering

Original narrative-time model, 'light': Sam paused under the flashing light. A week before, its flash had signalled a power failure. Now the caretaker was testing it in an otherwise bright room. Distinguish when events happened from when readers learn them. A past association can illuminate a present response without making the current event identical to the past one.
