Investigate base 2 with exponents 0 and -3. For non-zero a, a^0 = 1 and a^(-n) = 1/(a^n). A negative exponent indicates a reciprocal, not automatically a negative value. Brackets decide whether a minus sign belongs to the base: (-a)^2 differs from -(a^2). Do not apply the zero-power rule to a zero base here.

  2. Check 2^(-3) by multiplying it by 2^3.
