One-dimensional force model: an object has 6 N to the right and 14 N to the left; no other horizontal forces act. Right and left are opposite directions. A zero resultant permits rest or constant velocity; a non-zero resultant changes velocity. The force diagram alone does not give the object's current speed or direction of travel.
