Model light microscope: eyepiece x10, objective x4. Multiply these for total magnification. An observer records only a cell outline and a dark nucleus; no chloroplast is resolved. A later digital enlargement makes the same image twice as wide. Enlargement can make an image bigger without revealing new detail.

  2. Does doubling the width of this x40 image prove that twice as many structures are resolved?
  3. Should a record from these x10/x4 lenses label an unseen chloroplast as observed?
