Original opening, 'The team sheet': For days I had imagined my name at the top of the list. The corridor smelled of floor polish, and a loose window rattled. My name was halfway down. I folded the sheet, then unfolded it when another player asked who had been chosen. I held it where we could both read. Neither of us spoke at first. Notice how much story time is covered by each part. A short sentence can isolate a moment and slow attention; it does not always make a scene feel faster.
