Original opening, 'The final rehearsal': For two hours I had insisted that I knew every line. In the rehearsal room a strip light buzzed above the empty seats. At the last speech, my mind went blank. My partner whispered a word. I started again, then stopped. 'Can we practise that part together?' I asked. She moved her chair closer. Atmosphere is built from selected sensory details and their context. A sound can seem different to different readers; explain your reading with the text rather than naming a mood without evidence.
