Shape fact card: a square-based pyramid has 5 flat faces, 8 straight edges and 5 vertices (corners). Its faces are one square and four triangles. A cylinder has two flat circular faces and a curved surface. A sphere has no flat faces. An adult can show safe solid models to match these descriptions. A pupil says: 'This pyramid has four vertices because its base has four corners.' Use the fact card to check the claim.
