Original complete short passage, 'Canal rope': The boat was tied at the berth where Dev and his cousin had last quarrelled. Dev carried the missing logbook inside his coat. The mooring rope was frayed but still held. He took out the book and knocked on the cabin door. After a pause, he knocked again. Across the canal, a lock gate began to open.
