Editing brief: Nia carried the camera, not Maya; the encounter happened yesterday. Draft: 'When Nia met Maya, they were carrying the camera. The labels on it was unclear. Nia walks away.' Revise references, agreement and tense to convey the stated facts. Singular 'they' is grammatical; the issue here is an unclear referent.
