Use endpoints that maximise the expression - Online practice 3

Read the information, then answer the questions. An adult may read the instructions aloud. Show your working where asked.

Read before answering

Positive lengths a and b display 10 cm and 5 cm, each rounded to the nearest centimetre using halfway-up rounding. Thus 9.5 <= a < 10.5 and 4.5 <= b < 5.5. Keep endpoint inclusion explicit; the displayed values are not exact.

  1. Give the interval for a+b from the displayed 10 cm and 5 cm.
  2. Give exact lower and upper limiting bounds for a/b, and state whether either is attained.
  3. Why must the numerator and denominator endpoints be chosen differently for a quotient?
