Original complete short passage, 'Garden gate': Rain had flattened the path through the allotments. The plot beyond Nia's gate was cleared, though a single runner-bean stem clung to its cane. She placed the key in the envelope provided by the council. Before sealing it she looked again at the gate, then took the key out and wiped the mud from its teeth with her sleeve. Only then did she close the envelope.
