Number and Place Value

Number

A number is a mathematical item, used for counting and measuring. Numbers can be counted from zero to infinity (something that is endless). They can also be counted forwards and backwards.

Counting Forwards: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… is adding one (or more) value from an original number. Counting Backwards: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6… is taking away one (or more) value from an original number.

Odd number and even number

There are different types of numbers. Let’s learn about Odd and Even Numbers.

What is an odd number?

An odd number cannot be divided exactly by two, there are reminders on it.

For example : 1…3…5…7…

What is an even number?

An even number can be divided by two without reminders.

For example : 2…4…6…8…

Counting on twos

What is counting on twos?

Counting on twos is starting from any number, skipping a number then counting the next number.

Example: 2…4…6…8…10…

Counting on threes

Counting on threes is starting from any number, skipping two numbers then counting the next number.

Example: 3…6…9…12…15…

Counting on fives

Counting on fives is starting from any number, skipping four numbers then counting the next number.

Example: 5…10…15…20…25…

Counting on tens

Counting on tens is starting from any number, skipping nine numbers then counting the next number.

Example: 10…20…30…40…

Rounding tens

Rounding a number to the nearest ten,

Firstly, you should look for the right side unit number. If the unit digit number is five or more than five, you can round up or add one in the unit ten place. If it is less than five, you round down.

Place value

Place value is the position of the numbers.

Example: For 25: The unit digit is 5 and the tens digit is 2.
