A speaker is not automatically the author

1 · Learn

Read this original poem: I keep the last train's ticket / though the ink has almost gone. / The platform clock is working; / I am the one still waiting. The first-person speaker connects a fading object with emotional waiting.

The poem's speaker is a constructed voice. Analyse what that voice reveals without assuming the author personally experienced the event. Literal and figurative waiting can coexist.

2 · Worked example

The final line contrasts a functioning clock with a speaker who feels unable to move on, suggesting emotional rather than merely timetable-based waiting.

3 · Your turn

Which contrast supports an interpretation of emotional waiting?

Check your answer

The clock continues working while the speaker says they are still waiting; the old fading ticket also suggests time has passed.

4 · Apply your learning

Read the poem with two different pauses before the final line and explain the interpretive effect.

Adult guidance and safety

Use the actual supplied passage before asking for evidence. Accept alternative interpretations supported by precise details. These short models require wider whole-text reading, two authors studied in depth during the year, and the stage's Shakespeare provision before full KS3 coverage can be claimed.
