lesson
A paragraph should advance a line of reasoning
1 · Learn
An analytical paragraph connects a claim, selected evidence and an explanation of how the writing supports that claim. A quotation is not self-explanatory. A sequence of paragraphs should develop an argument rather than repeat the same point in different words.
For the line 'The empty chair faced the door', an analysis might connect the chair's orientation with expectation. It should distinguish that interpretation from the literal description and consider surrounding evidence when available.
2 · Worked example
A weak response says 'The writer uses an adjective.' A stronger one explains how 'empty' foregrounds an absence and how 'faced the door' may imply waiting.
3 · Your turn
Why is naming the adjective 'empty' insufficient on its own?
Check your answer
It identifies a technique but does not explain its contribution to meaning or the argument.
4 · Apply your learning
Develop a paragraph using the supplied sentence and explicitly mark the limits of the tiny extract.
Adult guidance and safety
Use the actual supplied passage before asking for evidence. Accept alternative interpretations supported by precise details. These short models require wider whole-text reading, two authors studied in depth during the year, and the stage's Shakespeare provision before full KS3 coverage can be claimed.

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.
Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
