A claim can conflict with its evidence

1 · Learn

Read: 'I never worried about the race. I had only checked the results board seven times because its paintwork interested me.' The narrator claims not to worry, but the repeated checking and unusual explanation invite doubt.

An unreliable perspective does not mean every reported detail is false. Analyse the tension between the claim and the behaviour, and avoid diagnosing a character or treating the narrator as the author.

2 · Worked example

I suggest the narrator may be disguising anxiety because seven checks seem excessive for casual interest in paintwork. I keep 'may' because the text invites inference rather than stating the feeling.

3 · Your turn

Which detail most clearly complicates 'I never worried'?

Check your answer

Checking the results board seven times, together with the strained explanation for doing so.

4 · Apply your learning

Write a first-person paragraph in which a narrator's actions gently undermine one claim, then explain the clues.

Adult guidance and safety

Require precise evidence and allow defensible alternative readings. Give feedback on sustained writing, not only short answers. These original short texts support skills but do not replace whole-book study, two authors in depth each year, stage-wide Shakespeare or a varied reading programme.
