Paragraphs should build a line of reasoning

An essay needs more than several unrelated paragraphs. Establish a focused interpretation, develop connected points and use the conclusion to draw them together rather than merely repeat the opening.
Plan the order of ideas and use transitions that express actual relationships: development, contrast, qualification or consequence. A formulaic connector cannot create a connection that the ideas lack.
2 · Worked example
For a character's changing confidence, I organise points around the early hesitation, a decisive choice and the later response. Chronology serves the argument rather than replacing it.

Why might a paragraph about unrelated weather weaken an essay about a character's changing responsibility?

Plan three connected points for an approved text, then draft a full essay and test whether each paragraph advances the central argument.
