Keep the important change

1 · Learn

Read: 'At first, the class wanted to plant the entire courtyard. They measured it and discovered that the central path had to remain clear. They revised the plan, putting raised beds around the edges. Families then helped fill the beds, and the courtyard stayed accessible.'

A summary keeps the main ideas and their relationship. It should explain how the plan changed and why, rather than list every noun or add an opinion about the class.

2 · Worked example

A concise summary is: 'The class changed its planting plan to keep the path clear, then worked with families to create edge beds.' It preserves the reason for the change.

3 · Your turn

Why would 'Families filled beds' be an incomplete summary?

Check your answer

It omits the original plan, the need for access and the resulting revision, which explain the main development.

4 · Apply your learning

Write a one-sentence and a two-sentence summary; check both against the supplied passage.
