lesson
Some written letters are not pronounced
1 · Learn
In words such as doubt, island and lamb, a written letter is not pronounced in the usual pronunciation. Listening alone may not reveal the spelling. Look carefully, say the word naturally and practise recalling its complete written form.
Word history and related words can sometimes help, but not every silent letter has a simple modern rule. Keep a personal checked list and test recall later rather than copying the same word without attention.
2 · Worked example
I notice the b in doubt and check it in a dictionary. I write a meaningful sentence, cover the model and reconstruct the spelling before comparing.
3 · Your turn
Which written letter is silent in lamb? Write a sentence using doubt with its full spelling.
Check your answer
The b in lamb. Example: 'I doubt the paper bridge will hold that heavy book.' The sentence must keep the b in doubt.
4 · Apply your learning
Practise three checked silent-letter words with spaced recall and explain what you need to remember.

Read the supplied text together if needed. Accept well-supported alternative interpretations, not invented evidence. Use wider whole books, poems and plays alongside these short original models; provide specific feedback on writing and revisit spelling over time.
Open your writing and drawing pad
Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.
Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
