Let the meaning guide your voice
1 · Learn
Read this original poem: 'One last leaf / holds the branch / while the wind / rehearses winter.' The line breaks create places to consider a pause, but they do not require identical pauses after every line.
The wind 'rehearsing' suggests a preview of stronger winter conditions. Try different pace and emphasis, then choose a reading that communicates your interpretation. A poem can support more than one thoughtful performance.
2 · Worked example
I slightly stress 'last' to suggest the leaf's isolation and slow the final phrase. I explain that choice using the image rather than claiming it is the only correct reading.
3 · Your turn
Is the wind literally practising a play? Explain the phrase in this poem.
Check your answer
No. 'Rehearses winter' personifies the wind and suggests a foretaste of winter weather.
4 · Apply your learning
Learn the four lines, perform them twice with different emphasis and discuss how the meaning changes.
