An inference needs a reason

1 · Learn

Read: 'Nadia checked the clock again. Her model bridge lay in two pieces. When footsteps sounded outside, she quickly moved a sheet of paper over the break and smiled.' The text states actions; it does not name Nadia's feelings.

An inference connects clues with a plausible explanation. Nadia may be worried about someone seeing the damage. That is supported by covering it, but the passage does not prove who is outside or exactly what will happen.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I infer that Nadia wants to hide the broken bridge because she covers the break as someone approaches. I do not claim the visitor is her teacher: that detail is absent.

3 · Your turn

Which detail most strongly supports the idea that Nadia is hiding the problem?

Check your answer

She moves paper over the break when footsteps approach. Other feelings may be possible, but this action directly supports concealment.

4 · Apply your learning

Write an inference using 'This suggests ... because ...', then list a detail the passage does not establish.

Adult guidance and safety

Read the supplied text together if needed. Accept well-supported alternative interpretations, not invented evidence. Use wider whole books, poems and plays alongside these short original models; provide specific feedback on writing and revisit spelling over time.
