lesson
Explain what the words make you notice
1 · Learn
Read this original line: 'The corridor swallowed their whispers; a thin blade of light lay beneath the door.' The corridor does not literally swallow, and the light is not a metal blade. The language shapes how the setting feels.
Name a technique only when it helps explain an effect. 'Blade' can suggest a narrow, sharp-looking strip and may add tension. Another interpretation needs a link to the actual words, not a list of unrelated literary terms.
2 · Worked example
I explain that 'swallowed their whispers' makes the corridor seem powerful and the voices small. I connect the effect to the verb, not just label it personification.
3 · Your turn
What does 'a thin blade of light' suggest about the light's shape?
Check your answer
A narrow, sharply defined strip. It is a metaphorical description, not evidence that light is solid metal.
4 · Apply your learning
Describe a familiar setting literally, then revise one phrase figuratively and explain the intended effect.
Adult guidance and safety
Read the supplied text together if needed. Accept well-supported alternative interpretations, not invented evidence. Use wider whole books, poems and plays alongside these short original models; provide specific feedback on writing and revisit spelling over time.
Open your writing and drawing pad
Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.
Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
