1 · Learn

Cohesion connects ideas across sentences and paragraphs. Pronouns can avoid repetition, but their referent must be clear. Words such as however, therefore and meanwhile express different relationships, not interchangeable decoration.

Read: 'The first design was strong. However, it was too heavy. Therefore, the team chose thinner card.' However introduces a contrast; therefore links a consequence to the problem.

2 · Worked example

In 'Lina told Amira that she had won', she may be ambiguous. I revise to 'Lina told Amira, “You have won.”' if Amira is the intended winner.

3 · Your turn

Which connective fits: 'The path flooded. ___, the group used the bridge': however or therefore?

4 · Apply your learning

Revise a paragraph to clarify one pronoun and one connection between ideas; explain both changes.
