Pollination is one step in reproduction

1 · Learn

Pollination moves pollen to a stigma. In sexual reproduction of flowering plants, fertilisation involves male and female sex cells joining; seeds can then develop.

Pollination and fertilisation are different events. A seed contains an embryo that can grow into a new plant under suitable conditions. Seed dispersal moves seeds away from the parent; it is not pollen transfer.

2 · Worked example

A bee can help transfer pollen. That transfer is not the same as the later seed being carried by wind or animals.

3 · Your turn

Which process moves pollen to a stigma? Is that the same as seed dispersal?

Check your answer

Pollination. No: seed dispersal moves seeds after they have formed.

4 · Apply your learning

Order accurate diagrams of the stages and explain the difference between two easily confused terms.

Adult guidance and safety

Use diagrams or safe adult-selected plants. Do not taste plant material or handle pollinating insects.
