Read the value, not just the digit

1 · Learn

In 608,045, the 6 represents 600,000, the 8 represents 8,000, the 4 represents 40 and the 5 represents 5. The zeros hold the ten-thousands and hundreds places.

Group digits in threes to read large numbers: six hundred and eight thousand and forty-five. Compare from the largest place where the digits differ.

608,045 = 600,000 + 8,000 + 40 + 5
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I compare 608,045 and 680,045. The hundred-thousands match, but 8 ten-thousands is greater than zero ten-thousands, so 680,045 is larger.

3 · Your turn

Write 450,307 in expanded form. Find 10,000 more than 389,500.

Check your answer

400,000 + 50,000 + 300 + 7; 399,500.

4 · Apply your learning

Use a labelled place-value chart to make and order numbers, then count forwards and backwards in 10s, 100s, 1,000s and 10,000s from non-zero starts.

Adult guidance and safety

Model the calculation or measurement before relying on a procedure. Explain estimates, units and checks. Use a ruler/protractor and suitable diagrams where needed; text examples alone do not establish practical skill or fluency.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Check a calculation · Year 5 onward

Use this only when your teacher or adult allows a calculator for the task. Show your thinking first. It does not replace mental or written arithmetic and does not mark your lesson answer.
