Change a verb with a prefix

1 · Learn

A prefix goes before a root. In reread, re- tells us to read again. In disagree, dis- changes agree to not agree. Both the root and the new word can be verbs. The prefix changes the meaning, not automatically the tense.

De- can suggest reversing or removing, as in defrost. Mis- can mean wrongly, as in miscount. Over- can mean too much, as in overfill. Overfill keeps both l letters in fill, and miscount keeps count unchanged. Read the new word in a complete sentence and check that it is an accepted word. Compare the whole word in its sentence: not every word beginning re means again, and prefixes do not all mean not.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

'I miscounted the counters' means my count was wrong. 'I recounted the counters' means I counted them again. Both have a past ending, ed, but the prefixes communicate different ideas. A second count might correct a wrong first count.

3 · Your turn

Choose a verb for each instruction: count again; fill too much; remove frost. Explain why miscount and recount are not interchangeable.

Check your answer

recount; overfill; defrost. Miscount means count incorrectly, whereas recount means count again. A recount is not necessarily wrong.

4 · Apply your learning

Write a short fictional problem and solution using misread and reread. Keep the events logical: a character might misunderstand a notice, reread it, and correct the mistake. Underline the prefixes and explain what each contributes.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
