Set apart extra information

1 · Learn

Parenthesis adds extra information that can be removed while the main sentence remains grammatically complete. Commas, brackets or dashes can mark it.

In 'The shed (built last year) needs painting', built last year adds a detail. Without it, 'The shed needs painting' still works. Brackets can make the extra detail feel more separate from the main message.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I check the sentence without the parenthesis before choosing punctuation. I close the bracket; one opening bracket alone is not enough.

3 · Your turn

Add brackets around the extra information: 'The guide a local historian led the walk.'

Check your answer

The guide (a local historian) led the walk.

4 · Apply your learning

Try the same extra detail with commas and dashes. Discuss how the presentation changes while keeping the sentence clear.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
