Look inside an unfamiliar word

1 · Learn

A root carries a core meaning. Prefixes and suffixes can change that meaning or the word's grammatical job. In reusable, re- suggests again, use is the root and -able suggests able to be used.

Word parts give clues, not an automatic definition for every spelling. Check context and a dictionary, especially when a word has several meanings or an unfamiliar history.

2 · Worked example

In 'The boxes are reusable', I explain that they can be used again. I do not simply name the parts without connecting them to the sentence.

3 · Your turn

Explain unpredictable using predict, un- and -able. Then use it in a sentence.

Check your answer

It means not able to be predicted reliably. For example: 'The changing wind made the boat's movement unpredictable.' Check that the sentence conveys the meaning.

4 · Apply your learning

Choose a new word from reading, predict its meaning from structure and context, then record a checked definition and example.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.
