Connect the ending to the root

1 · Learn

Words such as vicious and cautious have endings that sound similar but are spelled differently. A related noun can help: vice connects with vicious; caution connects with cautious.

Patterns help, but exceptions and individual spellings still need checking. Read the complete word, learn its meaning and use it in a sentence before testing recall.

vice → viciouscaution → cautiousambition → ambitious
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I connect ambitious with ambition and notice the -tious spelling. I check a dictionary if the root connection does not make the spelling clear.

3 · Your turn

Choose the correct spelling: cautious or caucious; ambitious or ambicious.

Check your answer

Cautious and ambitious.

4 · Apply your learning

An adult dictates: 'The cautious explorer checked the bridge.' Write it, then explain the spelling you needed to remember.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.
