lesson
Turn able and ible adjectives into adverbs
1 · Learn
An adjective can describe a person or thing: 'a comfortable chair'. A related adverb can explain how something happens: 'She sat comfortably'. Comfortable ends able; comfortably ends ably. Possible ends ible; possibly ends ibly and can mean perhaps.
For these pairs, change the final e to y: reasonable → reasonably, sensible → sensibly. Keep the earlier a or i from the adjective. Reliable becomes reliably; noticeable becomes noticeably and keeps the e after c inside the word. Do not guess every ending from sound or add ly after the complete adjective to make comfortablely. Check the model and meaning.
2 · Worked example
'The machine works reliably' means it can be depended on. I start with reliable, change its final e to y, and keep a in ably. 'The path is visibly marked' uses visibly from visible: i stays in ibly. I choose the word for its meaning as well as its spelling.
3 · Your turn
Form the adverbs from comfortable, possible and sensible. Explain which earlier vowel stays in each ending. Write a sentence with one of the adverbs.
Check your answer
comfortably (a), possibly (i), sensibly (i). The final e changes to y in each pair. For example, 'We waited comfortably on the seats' uses comfortably to describe how we waited.
4 · Apply your learning
Write four adjective/adverb pairs, including both endings. Cover the adverbs and recall them later. In a short paragraph, use two adverbs where they genuinely improve the meaning; remove unnecessary ones.
Adult guidance and safety
Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.
Open your writing and drawing pad
Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.
Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
