One hundred equal parts

1 · Learn

One hundredth is 1/100 of a whole, written 0.01. Ten hundredths make one tenth: 0.10 = 0.1.

A 10 by 10 grid has one hundred equal squares. Shading 27 squares represents 27/100, or 0.27. The 2 represents two tenths and the 7 represents seven hundredths.

One tenth is a row of ten squares on our hundred grid. Divide that row into ten equal pieces: each piece is one hundredth of the whole grid. So 0.1 divided by 10 is 0.01. Counting backwards from 0.12 gives 0.11, 0.10, 0.09; the step stays one hundredth across a tenth boundary.

27/100 = 0.27 10/100 = 0.10 = 0.1

2 · Worked example

Counting up by hundredths from 0.08 gives 0.09, 0.10, 0.11. Crossing a tenth does not change the step size.

3 · Your turn

Write 36/100 as a decimal. Continue 0.97, 0.98, __, __.

Check your answer

0.36; 0.99, 1.00.

4 · Apply your learning

Shade hundred grids and match fractions, decimal labels and tenths-plus-hundredths descriptions.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.
