Digits change their value

1 · Learn

Dividing by ten makes each digit worth one tenth as much. Dividing by one hundred makes it worth one hundredth as much.

For 37 ÷ 10, the 3 tens become 3 ones and the 7 ones become 7 tenths: 3.7. For 37 ÷ 100, the answer is 0.37. Do not use 'take away a zero' as a rule: 37 has no zero to remove.

37 ÷ 10 = 3.737 ÷ 100 = 0.37
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

Six divided by one hundred is 0.06. The zero in the tenths place matters: 0.6 is ten times larger.

3 · Your turn

Calculate 48 ÷ 10, 48 ÷ 100 and 9 ÷ 100.

Check your answer

4.8; 0.48; 0.09.

4 · Apply your learning

Move digit cards on a labelled place-value chart while keeping the decimal point between ones and tenths.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
