Across first, then up

1 · Learn

A coordinate pair describes a position on a grid. In the first quadrant, start at the origin, move along the horizontal axis for the first number, then up for the second.

For (3, 5), move three units across and five up. Reversing the order gives (5, 3), usually a different point. Use equal marked units on each axis.

Read the labels alongside the explanation.

2 · Worked example

I plot (2, 1), (6, 1), (6, 4) and (2, 4), then join them in order. They make a rectangle.

3 · Your turn

Three rectangle corners are (1, 2), (5, 2) and (5, 6). What is the fourth corner?

Check your answer

(1, 6), for the axis-aligned rectangle described by those points.

4 · Apply your learning

Draw and label axes, plot the four corners and check opposite sides before naming the shape.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.
