Make a picture with words

1 · Learn

Read this original short poem, using each slash as a line break: The town folds up its umbrellas / windows catch the evening gold / one bicycle whispers home.

The town cannot literally fold umbrellas as a person does. The wording helps picture people finishing a rainy day. Whispers suggests a quiet journey. Explain the image without confusing it with a literal report.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I read the last line softly to support the quiet image. I explain my performance choice using a word from the poem.

3 · Your turn

Does 'one bicycle whispers home' mean the bicycle can literally speak? What might it suggest?

Check your answer

No. It may suggest soft movement or a quiet sound on the journey. Other interpretations need a link to the words.

4 · Apply your learning

Prepare a short performance, then write two original lines describing evening. Discuss whether each image helps a listener picture the scene.

Adult guidance and safety

Read and discuss whole books, poems and plays alongside these original short models. Give evidence for interpretations and accept well-supported alternatives. Revisit spelling and handwriting over time; retain individual decoding support where needed.
