Morning or afternoon?

1 · Learn

A 12-hour clock repeats its numbers twice each day. Am and pm help distinguish the two halves. A 24-hour clock counts from 00:00 to 23:59.

After midday, add 12 to the hour number for 1 pm to 11 pm. Thus 4 pm is 16:00. Noon is 12:00; midnight at the start of a day is 00:00.

9 am = 09:004 pm = 16:00Noon = 12:00
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I convert 3:25 pm to 15:25. I keep the minutes the same and add twelve to the hour.

3 · Your turn

Write 6:10 pm in 24-hour time. Is 08:30 morning or evening?

Check your answer

18:10; 08:30 is in the morning.

4 · Apply your learning

Compare a familiar daily timetable written in both formats. Include noon and midnight carefully.

Adult guidance and safety

Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
