lesson
How many times as many?
1 · Learn
Three times as many means three equal copies of an amount. If one ribbon is 5 cm long, another that is three times as long is 15 cm long.
Combinations pair each item in one group with every item in another. Two shirts and three hats give six possible shirt-and-hat pairs.
2 · Worked example
I list each shirt with all three hats. Listing systematically stops me missing a pair or counting it twice.
3 · Your turn
A cafe offers three sandwich fillings and two breads. How many filling-and-bread combinations are possible?
Check your answer
6 combinations: each of the three fillings can go with either of the two breads.
4 · Apply your learning
Draw or list every combination and compare the list with a multiplication.
Adult guidance and safety
Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
