lesson
Read the scale before counting
1 · Learn
A chart uses a scale to show amounts. In a pictogram, one symbol might mean five books. Three symbols would then mean fifteen books.
Bar charts also have a scale. Read the labels and equal intervals before comparing bar heights. Always explain what the counted amount represents.
2 · Worked example
Class A has fifteen books and class B has twenty-five. Class B has ten more, not two more books.
3 · Your turn
With the same key, how many books do four symbols represent? How many more is that than three symbols?
Check your answer
20 books; 5 more books.
4 · Apply your learning
Turn a small table into a bar chart using a scale of two or five. Label the categories and number scale.
Adult guidance and safety
Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
