lesson
A clock with Roman numerals
1 · Learn
Some clocks use Roman numerals. I means one, V means five and X means ten. On many clocks, four is IV and nine is IX.
The positions do not change: XII is at the top, III at the right, VI at the bottom and IX at the left. Some clock faces use IIII instead of IV for four.
2 · Worked example
If the minute hand points to VI, it has travelled thirty minutes from XII. The Roman numeral does not change the time rule.
3 · Your turn
What number does IX show on a clock? What number is XII?
Check your answer
IX is 9 and XII is 12.
4 · Apply your learning
Label a paper clock with Roman numerals from I to XII, then show several familiar times.
Adult guidance and safety
Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
