Multiply the tens and ones

1 · Learn

Split a two-digit number into tens and ones, multiply both parts and add the results.

For 23 × 4, four groups of twenty make 80 and four groups of three make 12. Together they make 92. A short written method records the same place-value reasoning.

23 × 4 = 20 × 4 + 3 × 480 + 12 = 92
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

In short multiplication, 3 × 4 gives 12: record 2 ones and exchange 1 ten. Then 2 tens × 4 plus the exchanged ten gives 9 tens.

3 · Your turn

Calculate 34 × 3 and explain the parts.

Check your answer

102. Thirty times three is 90 and four times three is 12; 90 + 12 = 102.

4 · Apply your learning

Draw three bars split into 30 and 4. Connect your drawing to the written method.

Adult guidance and safety

Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.

Open your writing and drawing pad
